Uniforms

Members are required to wear appropriate uniforms when interacting with the public on behalf of the Auxiliary. The public sees us as "The Coast Guard," as such, it is our responsibility and duty to respect the uniform and wear it correctly.

A recent special issue of USCG Reservist is an excellent example of the proper and appropriate use of the US Coast Guard uniform. While some of the items may not be worn by Auxiliarists, it is still an exceptional guide. Be proud to wear your uniform correctly and honorably.

Tropical Blue Long is the first uniform that members should get. This uniform consists of the short sleeve light blue Air Force style shirt with stand-up collar and epaulets (collar is open, no tie), dark blue dress trouser, black web belt with either silver or Coast Guard Auxiliary logo (the end of the belt should be trimmed to not extend more than 2 inches from the buckle), black shoes, black socks, and the Garrison cap or Combination cap (covers). Member/Officer collar devices should not be worn with Tropical Blue Long.

The ODU (Operational Dress Uniform) is authorized for "working" situations such as Vessel Inspections, Boatcrew, working at the Station, "working" public events, etc... This uniform consists of a dark blue crew neck t-shirt, the dark blue shirt; "coat", dark blue trousers, black web belt with black buckle with the end trimmed to no more than 2 inches beyond the buckle, black socks, and either black boots (with blousing device) or blue, white or brown boat shoes. Boat shoes are authorized while on board a vessel, they are not authorized onshore. A Unit ball cap or the Tilley/sun cap is authorized with this uniform.

Service Dress Blue (Bravo) uniform is the official Uniform of the Day for meetings, classroom and similar functions. Service Dress Blue (Alpha) is reserved for solemn occassions (funerals) or for ceremonial/social activities after 1800 hours. The combination cap is the only authorized cover with this uniform.

Special notes:

  • Dress shoes should be black, with heel, made of smooth leather/synthetic material. They should be low cut, plain style with no stitching across the toe. Heels should be no higher than 1 inch. Sole edges, heels and laces must be black.
  • Hats, or "covers," should be worn while out doors. Covers should be removed as soon as is possible when entering a building or "covered area." Covers are optional in a vehicle but should be worn when exiting the vehicle.
  • A Coxswain will inform the crew if the ODU boots or boat shoes are acceptable on a vessel. The black boots can leave scuff marks. If a member is unsure which foot gear to wear, contact the coxswain before attempting to board the vessel.
